Perhaps it’s my family health issues – who am I kidding… that’s exactly what it is – but I’ve felt a very strong desire recently to research and document a family tree of sorts. I’d like to use an online tool that allows multiple members of a family to have their own logins but be able to collaborate on the same tree.
I just saw an ad on TV for Ancestry.com, and it looks very impressive. I have had several others mentioned to me recently, and am a little unsure as to where I should invest my time and that of a few Aunts and Uncles on my Father’s side of the tree, and my own Mother on hers. On a related note, her second round of chemo was completed a little over a week ago, her prognosis is excellent and it looks like she’ll be around long enough to help me with this project – and very far beyond. Way to go, Bonnie.
Does anyone have eny experience with Ancestry.com, Rootsweb.com, Geneaology.com or any of the apparently wide range of family history/tree sites available? I’d appreciate the input.

I signed up with Ancestery.com once to take it for a spin, I never had any intention of signing up or paying for the service. Well they ended up spamming the crap out of me even after I had unsubscribed through all the normal avenues. I ended up sending them a seething email and while I never heard back from them I haven’t heard from them since.
that probably doesn’t help you much, but it does sooth my pain

Hi Dave-
As a long time genealogist, I have experimented with several of the collaborative web sites that are available for cooperative genealogy work. The one that I have had the most success with is Geni.com I am not just sure why this is so, but many members of my family who have been invited to other sites, have ignored them, but many family members who have otherwise ignored my invitations have jumped all over Geni.com. It may be the easy interface, it may be the ability to upload pictures (a very popular feature), and it may be something entirely different, but Geni has engendered more participation than any other site I have tried.

Dave,
At the beginning of August FamilyLink.com launched its new site http://WebTree.com
This site provides a free place for you to share, store and manipulate your personal family tree online and all submissions will also be indexed on WorldVitalRecords.com and remain available at no cost.
This is also a collaborative site that you may want to look into.
